Vega 1

By Marty McDowell/NASA

On Dec 15, 1984, the Soviet Union launched Vega 1. This mission sent the first balloon into the Venus atmosphere. The balloon transmitted for 56 minutes in the dense Venusian atmosphere.

Vega 1 also made the first close flyby of Halley's Comet. Vega 2 was launched less than a week later and also made it to both Venus and Comet Halley.
