USFL Drafts

The United States Football League (USFL) had several drafts. Before each season in January, a full day of drafting was held with two drafts taking place. The first was the Territorial Draft in which each team was assigned a five college pool from which it could select a predetermined number of players. After those selections were made, a Regular Phase draft was held in much the same way NFL teams draft players today. In order to prevent USFL teams from driving up prices on free agent NFL players, the league had a draft to allocate their rights (in future years, the USFL simply allocated each of their teams a certain number of NFL teams whose free agents were theirs to sign, if they so chose). The NFL struck back in 1984 and held a draft of USFL players that might become available.

We have listings for many of these drafts:

1983 Territorial Draft : 1983 Regular Phase
1984 Territorial Draft : 1984 Regular Phase
1985 Territorial Draft : 1985 Regular Phase

Share Your Memories!

We have a USFL Forum! Our sites have always been by you and about you. If you check our TV Forums or our Technology & Science forums, you'll find literally thousands of messages from fans of 1970s TV shows, survivors of hurricanes or aircraft accidents, etc. from all over the world sharing their memories, asking questions, making comments. Our baseball section is new, but don't let that stop you from sharing your memories of USFL games you saw, now-forgotten stadiums, etc. Of course you can also ask questions, post trivia, or just read what others are saying.
