John Cougar - American Fool Grammy Winner! RIAA Certified Multi-Platinum! Click here to see this CD at Amazon.com!

By Percy Keegan

This is the record that transformed John Cougar (né John Mellencamp and soon to be John Cougar Mellencamp) into a superstar. "Hurts So Good" was destined to be a huge hit--ludicrous, powerful, and utterly unforgettable--and has long since gone on to be something of a rock & roll standard. But the real revelation on this record was "Jack and Diane," a poignant slice of life from a small town somewhere in middle America, a topical vein he would mine with even greater success on later recordings (especially on The Lonesome Jubilee). Backed by a crisp, powerful, spot-on band that gave a needed sense of urgency to the material, Cougar deservedly wore the mantle of Mainstream Rock King while this record ruled the airwaves.

"I love this album. Love it, love it, love it. I was ten years old when it came out, and mowed many lawns to get the money together to buy it. I hear this album, and think of sunny summer days, simpler times, and a whole lot of fun. Hanging out with friends, parties on the weekend and chasing girls. lol All the guys I knew seemed to have this tape blaring out of the car windows wherever we went.

That is back in the day when talent actually meant something in music. And shallow stars that were all style and no substance were an embarassment to everyone, and treated accordingly. Pop acts and boy bands were for kids and one wouldn't be caught dead listening to them for the utter garbge that they were.

My how things have changed.

So, here is a tip of the hat to John Cougar for making albums that actually meant something to people and rock n roll. May we be so lucky to live to see his kind again."
